Hector Burgos

Hector Burgos was a Puerto Rican mechanic and the longtime best friend of Rafael Cruz. Hector and Rafael were the same age and regarded each other as brothers despite having no biological relationship.

Hector stood approximately five feet nine inches, with a sturdy frame and strong hands shaped by mechanical work. He had dark-brown eyes and dark-brown hair kept practical for work, and he usually wore clean, functional work clothes. He was steady and kind, more inclined to arrive with help than to make promises he could not keep.

Early Life and Background

Hector and Rafael met at nine and grew up together in Puerto Rico. When Marisol became pregnant with Ezra, Hector supported the teenage couple from the beginning. He helped them gather furniture and borrowed trucks when they needed to move. He later moved to Miami with the Cruz family and worked as a dealership mechanic.

Personality

Hector was loyal to Rafael and remained involved with Rafael, Marisol, and their children after the family’s move. He showed care through practical help and consistent presence. Ezra and Luna knew him as an uncle-like figure within the family, not only as their father’s friend.

Family and Core Relationships

Rafael Cruz

Hector was Rafael’s closest friend from childhood. After Rafael’s disabling construction injury, Hector drove him to medical appointments, helped him move when pain made walking impossible, and sometimes stayed overnight to help Marisol during severe flares. Hector later died in a car accident in 2014, when he was about twenty-five and Ezra was eight. His death intensified Rafael’s depression and withdrawal during the years when Rafael was already living with severe chronic pain.

Marisol Cruz, Ezra Cruz, and Luna Cruz

Hector supported Marisol and Rafael as teenage parents and remained connected to the household after the move to Miami. Ezra later gave his son Rafael Héctor Cruz Hector’s name alongside Rafael’s.

Leslie

Hector’s girlfriend, Leslie, was pregnant with their child when he died. Hector initially survived the car accident, including repeated cardiac arrests and emergency surgery, but the crash caused catastrophic brain damage. Leslie made the decision to withdraw life-sustaining treatment after the medical team determined that he would not recover.

Memorable Quotes

“Then let’s build you a life, cabrón. I got your back.”

(Hector’s response when Rafael told him Marisol was pregnant.)
